THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

A. General description of Department
1. The ECTS departmental co-ordinator
The Department is subordinated to the faculty, i.e. to the Dean, Dr. Vladimir Rasvan, Professor, who is also responsible for ECTS at the level of the Faculty.
The ECTS departmental co-ordinator is the Head of Department, Dr. Gheorghe Marian, Reader
Co-ordinators are available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily (except holidays).

2. Structure and organisation
The department is composed of 31 people, among which 26 are Academic Staff (teaching and research) and 5 are auxiliary (engineers, technicians, secretaries). The number of co-ordinated students is composed of :

  1. around 250 students directly co-ordinated in the programme of BEng in Control Engineering (with two options: Digital Systems Design and Software Systems Design).
  2. around 300 students partially co-ordinated in the other BEng programmes of the faculty
  3. around 1000 students partially co-ordinated in the BEng programmes of other faculties (course units in Computer Programming and Microprocessor-based Systems)
  4. students directly co-ordinated in the post graduate programmes (MEng)
  5. doctoral students directly co-ordinated.

The main research interests of the department are the following:

Specialist facilities The students may use the Faculty Library (about 20000 books) as well as the Central University Library, and the Library of Department (about 200 books, most of them in English). All other Faculty Libraries within the University are accessible to all students. The access is free of charge. The Academic Staff has at its disposal a Staff Lecture Room where more than 100 scientific journals are available.
The practical activities of the students within the offered programmes are performed in the following multifunctional laboratories:

  1. Computer Programming Lab I
    Disciplines covered: Introduction to Computers, Programming Languages, Programming Techniques
  2. Computer Programming Lab II
    Disciplines covered: Algorithms and Data Structures, Numerical Methods, Operating Systems, Assembly Language Programming, Computer Networks
  3. Digital Systems Lab I - Logical Design of Digital Computers,
    Computer Architecture, Computers Organisation, Digital Integrated Circuits
  4. Digital Systems Lab II
    Disciplines covered: VLSI Circuits and Microprocessors, Microprocessor Systems, Computer Systems Testing, Input/Output Systems, Data Communications
  5. Software Systems Lab I
    Disciplines covered: Computer Graphics, Object-Oriented Programming, Database Management Systems, Database Design, Formal Languages and Translators, Software Engineering, Expert Systems
  6. Software Systems Lab II
    Disciplines covered: Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, Operating Systems Design, Computer Networks, Local Area Networks, Parallel Processing Algorithms, Real-Time Computer Systems
The students in Computer Science & Engineering have access also to the laboratories of the other two Departments (Automatic Control and Electronics & Instrumentation), as well as to the Laboratories of other faculties (Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Machinery, Mechanics) for the basic disciplines.

4. The main teaching and learning methods used in the department are:

a) Lectures
b) Class exercises and seminars
c) Laboratory work
d) Individual projects
e) Practice and Industrial Placement (each year, in summer)
The assessment is performed as follows
- written examination
- written and oral examination (2 disciplines each year)
- oral examination
- continuous assessment (during class exercises and laboratory works)
- Oral assessment at the end of an industry placement stage is based on a project developed during the stage.
- Three written licence examinations are taken after the completion of the undergraduate studies.
- Oral defence of a thesis (Diploma project)

6. Local grading scale
The grading scale used throughout in Romania is the scale of marks from 1 (minimal) to 10 (maximal). The student is considered as minimally accomplishing the tasks of the assessed unit course if the mark is 5. It is proposed that this mark should signify the grant of the full credit attached to the unit course.
The are some disciplines where the assessment is purely qualitative, without marks (ADMITTED or REJECTED - AWM in Curricula Description).

B. Degree Structure
1. Qualifications
Description and structure of the regular degree programmes offered in the department is given below.
The students obtaining ADMISSION (marks higher than 5) for all Curricula course units) - each year (level) are promoted to the next level. After the 5th level (10th Semester) they have to pass the 3 licence examinations (of the basic and speciality disciplines) and elaborate and depend an individual thesis (project). For these final assessments the minimal mark is 6 (of the 10 marks scale). The student completing all these requirements is a awarded the degree of diplomat engineer (BEng) in the corresponding programme.
The applicants for a Master programme (1 year) are selected by a selection examination (two written examinations). The minimal average mark is 8 (of the 10 marks scale). The postgraduate student has to complete all the exams of the Curriculum with the minimal mark 6 (of the 10 marks scale) and to depend a Master Thesis (Dissertation). Accomplishing this the student is awarded the degree of Master in the corresponding programme (MEng).
