"Elena Cuza" High-School
A Historical Evolution

1833 Two great broad-minded men, the landowness Iordache Otetelisanu and Constantin Lazaro founded the first Private School "Lazaro-Otetelisanu" for Young Ladies in our country, here, in Oltenia at that time. The two founders considered that it was absolutely necessary for the benefit of our country to have a special school for young ladies with wonderful teachers and pupils.
1848 During the Romanian Revolution, here, in Craiova, this school was the centre where the propagandist club which had among its members great personalities such as Theodor Aman, Gheorghe Chitu a.s.o., developed most of its activities.
1860 The Private School for Young Ladies was taken under the leadership of the Romanian state.
1864 The school became the most important state educational institution and it played the role of the first School Teacher Training Institute for Young Ladies in Oltenia.
1877 Together with all the citizens of the country the teachers and the pupils of this school made a great effort to support the struggle of the Romanian people during the Independence War, 1877-1878.

Our school is famous owing to the excellent results of its teachers and pupils and it develops its entire acivity according to the demand imposed by the progress of our science. Taking into account the transformations which took the place within the structure of the Romanian educational system the high-school changed its name as follows: it was called "Elena Cuza" Secondary School for Young Ladies until 1951; The School no.1 for Young Ladies until 1959; The School no.3 until 1966; The High-School no.3 until 1976; The High-School with Scientific and Humanistic Sections until 1977.
