I joined the Rippers April 1969 and left in Aug 1970. Anyone remember Chief Weimer? Richard "Dick" Suryan? Gary "Joker" Cook? Dr. Lapes? I worked in the AE shop as a "box swapper" fro a short time. I was mostly TAD mess, laundry or compartment cleaner. I seemed to stay in trouble or in the brig (young and stupid). Remember the Ripper's nickname? The "World Famous Lead Zippers"? It was dubbed on us in the Med. by our sister sqaudron VF-74 at the time. Served in Oceana and attached the the USS Zippo (Forrestal). Those were good times! Feel free to email me if you remember who I am.

If you'll notice the boars head on the Red Ripper patch and the boars head on the Gordon's gin label are the same. I was checking into the squadron in the summer of 1962. In the ready room at NAS Cecil Field, there was a squadron photo album. In the album were letters from the US distributer of Gordon products (gin/vodka etc.)& a group of Red Ripper pilots. The letter from the pilots stated "they were looking for a logo for their squadron and requested permission to use the boars head on the squadron patch. The letter from Gordon's gave permission. Gordon's also sent the squardron officers several cases of gin. To the best of my recollection. The dates were circa early 1930's. I have no idea what ever happened to the scrap book. It did chronicle the early days of the squadron thru the F2H Banshee and the F8U Crusader days. The album had some great photo's. Including the ejection sequence of Ltjg. Kryway ejecting from his F8 off the USS FDRoosevelt. Notations also refer to VF14 pilots wearing Top Hats on the flight line, going to their planes. There were photo's of this in the album. This was one of the reasons the Red Rippers were looking for a unique squadron patch. Phil Tait

I entered the Naval Air Reserves at NAS Lakehurst, N.J. in Feb. 1968. Went on 2 years active duty in Feb. 1969, sent to Fleet Air Electronics Training Unit Det 0 at NAS Jacksonville for a 3 month basic aviation electronics training course (which I never used), then sent to VF11. After 3 months of mess cooking followed by 3 months compartment cleaning, I was sent to VF11 Maint office for assignment, where they needed Plane Captains, so I was assigned as a "second mech" (plane capt. trainee) in the line division. Worked in line division until separated from active duty, then did 3 more years in HS-75, a reserve ASW H3 Sea King squadron at Lakehurst until being honorably discharged at the end of my 6 years obligation. I had a "bad" attitude about Naval service at the time but as the years have passed I look back at my Navy time as "the good old days". My biggest regret today was that I didn't then have enough sense to recognize the available opportunities and make a career in the Navy.

Joined VF-11 Feb '52 @ JAX mainside.Boarded Oriskany 5/52 for Cape Horn and South America. Arrived San Diego 7/52. Rippers attached to CAG 101 aboard Kearsarge 8/52.Korea TF 77 from 9/52 to 2/53. Lost Lt. Lee and skipper CDR Denny Phillips during this tour. The squadron returned to NAS Cecil Field on 18 March '53. During next few months changed to F2H-4's and F3D's for night fighter training. I was discharged in July 1954 just before the squadron left for the Med on the Coral Sea. Would like to hear from shipmates of the '52-'54 period.

I remember well when VF-11 got the F8U-2NE, which moved them up to the role of A/W-Day/Night fighter; as opposed to the earlier model which had no radar..as I recall. Also worth mentioning is the unfortunate hook/eye ratio & distance from #1 wire to the ramp! Ramp strikes used to happen on our early style/angle deck "midway" class carrier. To VF-11's credit she flew on the CVA with most cycles in the Carrier Navy at that time '59-'61..John

Twas the night before Christmas He lived all alone In a one bedroom house made of Plaster and Stone I had come down the Chimney With presents to give. And to see just who In this home did live. I looked all about A strange sight I did see. No tinsel, No presents, Not even a tree. No stocking by the mantle, Just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures Of far distant lands. With medals and badges, Awards of all kinds, A sober thought Came through my mind. For this house was different, It was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, Once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, Silent, alone, Curled up on the floor In this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, The room in such disorder, Not how I pictured A United States Soldier. Was this the hero Of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a Poncho, The floor for a bed? I realized the families That I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers Who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, The children would play, And grownup would celebrate A bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, Like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder How many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve In a land far from home. The very thought Brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees And started to Cry. The soldier awakened And I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, This life is my choice." The solider rolled over And drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, So silent and still And we both shivered From the cold nights chill. I didn't want to leave On that cold, dark, night, This guardian of Honor So willing to fight. The solider rolled over, With a voice soft and pure, Whispered, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas Day, All is secure." One look at my watch, And I knew he was right. "Merry Christmas my friend, And to all a good night." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable... Please. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many People as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed

A good friend of mine served on the USS Kennedy in the 80's, the "Rippers" were on board then. I have a 2 year old son whom I am trying to get interested in jets. He's my little fighter jock, he likes to watch jets, but, is afraid of the noise, as was I when younger. Its a sweet sound and someday, hopefully, he'll be telling me theres nothing better than being a fighter pilot.

Dear Rippers, My late grandfather (Walter Madden) was a Red Ripper in World War Two, seeing action in North Africa amongst other places. I have interest in finding printed versions of squadron history, sources where I might find any specific records regarding his service, and any other information and hopefully photographs and other memorabilia about the Rippers. Let me know if you can help. The US Navy has been little help. I'm sure they've got better things to do... Thank you for your fine work on the site, your fine work in the air and on the sea, and please be safe. Yours, Patrick Works

It's 1958, NAS JAX has several Banshees. The pilot, Samuel I. Rogers has just returned and received the Air Medal for extraordinary deployment in the Korean Theatre. Fuel pump failure under 350 ft. on approach at NAS JAX results in history. So, it seems "glide ratio" was replaced by sheer thrust? No time for ejection seat and it's encremental problems? All in all I remain still proud of his feats.

1965-1967 in transition from F8 at Cecil Field to F4B in Oceana. On board for the Forrest Fire. I think the disaster and those lost should get a mention on the history page (or maybe a dedicated page).

I was a Ripper RIO '89-'90 while CDR Richardson and then CDR "Bobo" Habel were COs. I also worked for former Ripper skipper CAPT John Combs at COMNAVAIRLANT Readiness and Training. I still have my coffee cup and flight suit name tag but have lost the rest of my memorabilia during numerous moves over the years. Is it possible to get a list of available items from your coffee mess officer (any 10 year old photos)? When's the reunion?

Great site, good to see that the squadron is still active. Served with VF-11 1965 - 69. made the Nam cruise and one Med cruise. Was there when the squad moved from Jacksonville to Oceana. Still remember the summer of 66 on the beach, lots of young lady tourists. To the current Sqadron - have fun, be safe and thanks for being there.

I was in Virginia Beach 2 weeks ago on business and passed the exit for NAS Oceana. Iwondered if the RIPPERS were still there. After reading the history I know where you. I wanted to know if there are hats or shirts available. I only have one patch and a lighter (stopped smoking). I hope all are well or 4.0! I look forward to your reply.

I was a AQF AN &3rd during 1960 and 1961. Good times on two Med cruises on FDR (CVA-42) out of Cecil Field, and a short period in Rota, Spain "shore carrier" duty. I wonder if Carl Newell reads this?

HELLO VF-ELEVEN, Just thought I would stop by for a visit and read up on the F-14 Tomcat. Personally I prefer the noisey and smokey F-4 but as they always say "times change". Good Luck to all of you from BOTTOM to TOP.
