F-14A: The Beginning



The cartoons shown below originally had been two single images. The cartoons were made by Grumman in the early '70s and were supposed to show that while TC (TomCat or the pilot) is dreaming of girls, GIBS (Guy In Back-Seat = the RIO) is thinking about getting the whole thing to work. This was always good for a laugh with F-14 aircrews. "Do the RIOs do all the work while the pilots just drive the thing?" It was good natured fun and a great "ice breaker" at NATOPS conferences.


In case you wonder: The RIO's equation is the equation for the lift-coefficient and describes (simplified) the ratio of lift (generated by wings and fuselage) and lift-generating area ...
