CVN-71, CVW-8 and VF-14 on nationwide TV!
May 12th 1999, aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)

Where in the World is Matt Lauer Today? Well the answer to that question may vary to a large extent on a dayly basis, but for the 12th of May 1999 the correct answer definitely was: aboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)! click for photo! This event scored a first for the NBC team, and indeed a first for television: the first ever full-band live broadcast from the deck of a carrier at sea! And all this while CVN-71 was heading back to an operational area to rejoin Operation Allied Force after all hands had enjoyed a port call in Antalya, Turkey.  The Tophatters were by no means absent from the show with Matt Lauer taking a ride in one of VF-14's jets, wearing a tophat-adorned helmet and getting himself a nickname: "Lips". Anyone wonder where that came from?

read XO bio!The show also featured an interview with CDR Samuel "Slammer" Richardson, VF-14 XO, and an appearance by our CO, CDR TEd Carter. But even if not seen, all the wonderful men and women of VF-14 where there, doing their duty with pride and professionalism, and showing true team spirit.

The show clearly had a huge audience demonstrated by the incredible amount of e-mail it has generated. Once again, Tophatters rule!
