crashed 02.10.1997:
A failure of left horizontal stab linkage - while the trailing edge was down - threw the plane into violent right-hand rolls. When the pilot put in corrective stick, the plane would pitch down violently due to a stuck left-hand horizontal stab. This flight condition was unrecoverable. The RIO pulled the ejection handle at 7000 feet. The mishap pilot died when his ejection seat failed. The RIO was picked up by a rescue helo within one hour.

Summer of 1998: A student pilot flying in an F-14A (BuNo 161445) collided with an instructor flying in an F-14B (BuNo 163218). The student became fixated on his HUD in a night-time missile shot, and overtook his target plane. At the last moment, he noticed the F-14B target plane and rolled wings right to avoid it shearing off about 4 feet of right wing of each aircraft. They both limped home safe! |
