 		M61-A1 Cannon



The M61-A1 gun is a very short range weapon for close air-to-air combat or even for air-to-ground gun runs. It can fire at a rate of about 6,000 rounds a minute - but not that it has only ammunition for about 10 seconds!

The very early F-14 prototypes had a shorter gun fairing (below left) than fleet F-14s. Gun gas purge vent holes changed slightly during the Tomcat's service life (left to right):
